HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Samantha is doing very well at home. She had chemo at Dartmouth on Friday night and was able to come home Saturday morning. This was the same chemo she had last time so we expect her to do well.

Within the next few weeks Sammy will have a chest CT to check on those lung nodules again, as well as an angiogram so the orthopedic surgeon can get a good look at all of the veins in Sammy's legs. Assuming there are no surprises, Sammy will have her surgery in Boston mid to late January. It will be an above the knee amputation (the tumor is in her femur, above the knee). It is possible that the surgeon will be able to "turn up" some of the lower leg and use it for the upper leg. That would enable Sammy to have more power when she uses a prosthetic because she'd have more muscle and bone.

Last week we had the opportunity to vist Next Step in Manchester. Next Step is the place where Sammy will get her prosthetic leg. After meeting with some of the prosthetists and their clients (one of whom, Jon, is a very cool teen from Bow that some of you know), we were able to turn a lot of our feelings of sadness into feelings of anticipation and excitement. While we are devestated that Samantha has to go through this, we can't wait to see her take her first step and move on with her life. Samantha will be able to do anything she wants to do and, knowing how tough and determined she is, we know that she will.

New pictures for the website are coming. We rely on Krista to post the pictures (THANK YOU, Krista!) because we just don't know how and Krista has all the time in the world to do it (right?) So we'll get our act together soon and put Krista to work.

We hope you all have a wonderful holiday!

Shari and David

Happy Holidays Sammy and family! Shari, I'm working in the State Office which certifies group homes (ironic isn't it?) and many of my co-workers and old friends from the Moore Center are keeping an eye on Sammy's progress. She's got a cheering section going here! I'm sure she has a guardian angel as well! Take Care! Marilee

Rotman family,

Thanks for the latest update. We're so glad you had the opportunity to meet with people at Next Step who gave you some feelings of optimism. We remember when Samuel started using a wheelchair, it was a really tough thing to get used to. Now he zooms all over our home and Beaver Meadow school in his power-assisted "zoom chair" as we call it. It is a wonderful asset for him, and it gives him tons of freedom. Since Sammy has to have this very tough surgery, it is good to be able to see the possibilities for lots of activity and mobility beyond it. I'm sure she'll be walking and running before too long - sometimes we can hardly keep up with Samuel around the house, down the ski slopes, on our street (on his trike-bike) and on the baseball field!

love and health to you all,
Dan, Betsy, Isaiah and Samuel
